Experts say this is "the last throw of the dice" so that makes it five "last throws" by my reckoning.

This one is by German police investigating the actions of Christian B who was living in the area at the time and is accused of raping an American tourist aged 72. That appears to be all they have on him in the four years he has been in custody.

It is 18 years since Maddy disappeared, so she would be 21 now, and the chances of finding any (young) bones are remotely slim so why not let her rest?

Another puzzle, for me, is an overlooked scenario - that of Maddy being taken for sale or to be raised in a family of another culture and in another country. It does happen. If that were to be the case she would have scant, if any, memories of her previous life.

It's time to let things go, not least for the other members of her family.

I sincerely hope they find something conclusive for the family's sake, and then (cynicism button: on) we can all get on with the rest of our lives ......
